Today, the North Carolina State Bar has moved to disbar the former Durham County District Attorney for malicious prosecution of three Duke University lacrosse players for rape.
Yesterday, Nifong agreed to step down from his position in Durham County, based on the publicity he and his office has received from this attention.
During the hearing, before the North Carolina State Bar, Nifong attempted to explain the inconsistencies between evidence and his continued course of action against the three individuals. In the end, the evidence did not confirm the allegation of rape made by the woman, who was allegedly a stripper at a party where the students had attended, but the district attorney's office continued with its investigation, which became comparable to a "witch hunt."
It is nice to see that people who would abuse their position can be punished, and ultimately held accountable.
