When confronted with a request for documents from the vice president's office, the National Archives' Information Security Oversight Office was refused, and then when the agency pressed the issue, the vice president moved to abolish the office.
Could such heavy handed tactics be utilized by Vice President Cheney?
Cheney's office argued that they were outside the scope of an executive agency; therefore, outside the purview of the agency's authority.
The chairman of the United States House of Representatives' Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Henry Waxman (D-CA), wrote to Dick Cheney stating, "I question both the legality and wisdom of your actions...[y]our decision to exempt your office from the president's order is problematic because it could place national security at risk."
Of course, we realize such stall and scare tactics are characteristic of any agency in the Bush administration, including Dick Cheney.
