Generalissimo Augusto Pinochet, the one time dictator of Chile, has died today, in Santiago. I hope this puts an end to the whirlwind of attempted prosecution of this old man. The United Kingdom began it all by arresting him almost ten years ago and holding him based on an arrest warrant issued by a Spanish judge.
The British found he could not be extradited from England and he was released from house arrest, when he then returned to Chile. He was then held on various charges ranging from murder to extortion to money laundering. Basically, the last ten years of his life have been spent under house arrest.
The lesson? Be careful what enemies you make and be sure you have enough friends to keep you out of trouble once you're no longer in office!
