Queen Elizabeth II Arrives for the Kentucky Derby

The Governor and the Queen

Getting Queen Elizabeth to the gazebo on the infield side of the track where Gov. Enrie Fletcher watches the Derby was too much of a security risk. Speaking to reporters outside the 6th flood media center, Fletcher said he invited the queen to watch the Derby with him and First Lady Glenna Fletcher, but Her [Majesty] declined. He said he would get to meet her, however, before the big race.

The Queen Arrives at the Downs

The motorcade for Queen Elizabeth II arrived at Churchill Downs shortly before 3:30 p.m., after she flew into the Louisville International Airport. The Queen is expected to make a short stay at the track, and possibly a brief public appearance, before leaving the same way she came. Her entourage came in past Gate 17, and entered through a non-public entrance.
