The wife of present president of Argentina, Nestor Kirchner, Senator Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner has become the first woman in the history of the country to win a presidential election.
Although, she cannot claim to be the first woman to be president of a Western Hemisphere nation--that right goes to Isabel Martínez de Perón, who was the vice president and wife of infamous former president of Argentina, General Juan Perón, from 1974-1976--she can claim to be the first to win her own position in a direct national election.
Many see her political career as being similar to that of Senator Hillary Clinton. She rose to power through her own means to become a senator and influential advisor to her husband.
